The breakup of The Beatles was just as earth shattering as Sgt. Pepper’s, at least to many fans. The end of the Fab Four’s union has been under critical scrutiny for more than three decades, yet the same flares of drama and mysticism still engulf the entire story. You can blame Epstein’s death, Yoko Ono, growing egos, or one of the many other contributing factors permeating the minds of Beatlemaniacs and you’ll still never be 100% sure. Two things can be for certain: 1. The Beatles are the most popular and influential group in musical history and 2. Lennon-McCartney was the best songwriting duo to ever collaborate.
With a band as notable as The Beatles, especially with such a prolific songwriting duo, a breakup usually isn’t always a heartfelt dissolution. John and Paul, the perfect foils of one another and good friends, catapulted themselves into a feud circa 1970. The media of their era (and media of following generations) made their rivalry a well documented battle complete with bitter quotes, stories tinged with disdain, and a feeling of hostility. As you can imagine, a feud between two brilliant songwriters was bound to spill over in their respective musical works – a musical joust between two creatively charged characters on very high horses.
[MP3] Paul McCartney – Too Many People
McCartney was still smarting from the demise of The Beatles, a band that was more or less managed by Paul in its latter stages. Ram was a commercial hit that came armed with a few songs that took obvious jabs at John. “Too Many People” kicks off the album with a clear knock to John. The lines “Too many people waiting for their lucky break / That was your first mistake / You took your lucky break and broke it in two / Now what can be done for you? / You broke it in two”. The song also makes barbs at John and Yoko’s self-images as important political figures “Too many people preaching practices / Don’t let ‘em tell you what you want to be”.
[MP3] Paul McCartney – Dear Boy
Jumping ahead a few tracks on Ram you’ll find “Dear Boy” immediately bringing their dispute to the forefront with the opening line “I guess you never knew dear boy, what you have found”. Paul, of course, cleverly masked his bitterness as a trivial love song but even the final verse is blatantly obvious: “I hope you never know, dear boy / How much you missed / And even when you fall in love, dear boy / It won’t be half as good as this”. If this doesn’t invoke images of Paul and John scoffing at one another, wait until you hear John’s retaliation composition.
[MP3] John Lennon – How Do You Sleep?
Just looking at the title of the song and knowing of their newborn grudge, one should be able to deduct how harsh this song might be. The ‘might be’ will quickly be replaced with an ‘is’ once you hear John croon spiteful line after spiteful line – almost all of which are an attack on Paul in some regard. Making a reference to the ‘Paul is dead’ hoax, “Those freaks was right when they said you was dead / The one mistake you made was in your head” and criticizing his songwriting, “The only thing you did was yesterday / And since you’re gone, you’re just another day”. Referencing Paul’s only good work being “Yesterday” and that his current work (i.e. solo single “Another Day”) was rubbish; his best work being behind him.
The temperamental feud that lived within stereo speakers was also (appropriately) resolved in the same manner. Paul appeared to shake the childish feud and take the higher road with his song ”Dear Friend” on a Wings’ album. Apology or not, The Beatles weren’t getting back together ever again. The grudge that spilled over into their music became the closest thing to a post-Beatles John and Paul reunion until a toot and a snore in ’74.
“People said, ‘It’s a pity that such a nice thing had to come to such a sticky end. I think that too. It is a pity. I like fairy tales. I’d love it to have had the Beatles go up in a little cloud of smoke and the four of us just find ourselves in magic robes, each holding an envelope with our stuff in it. But you realize that you’re in real life, and you don’t split up a beautiful thing with a beautiful thing.” -Paul McCartney

Great post. You know, I’m sure entire sites are devoted to just this topic. What most people don’t realize is: the fact these 4 lads stayed together for over a decade in the first place was a miracle. L/M was a freak of nature, at an opportune time. Almost like a “perfect storm”. Never again will we see the likes of that. -obd
i wholeheartedly agree obd.
That was one of the best blog posts I’ve read on this site, and probably also on the web in general.
Good job. I loved it.
I would argue that George Harrison is unfairly looked over when people think of the Beatle’s songwriting – and he shouldn’t be.
why even write this? did the Beatles break up yesterday? did Paul decide not to be a complete douchebag anymore? everyone beats this horse to death. The Beatles are such an overrated act. The greatest thing they ever contributed to music was the way it was marketed, and now thanks to that we have fun sites like this.
taylor sucks.
anyone who says the beatles are overrated has zero credibility when it comes to their opinion about music. it is impossible to argue that they are the most influential band in history.
Wow. Taylor needs to go back and join Zak and Isaac and sing a few more mmmmbop songs. As for your post, certainly the best in many many weeks here. Rather than blame Yoko or other events, I have always felt that John’s emotional insecurities, triggered in part by never really knowing his dad, and seeing his mom killed by a car, served to eventually boil over. In the end, he simply wanted nothing to do with Paul nor anyone else for that matter. Still, he managed to crank out many classic hits (just as did Paul) after the breakup. Imagine (no pun intended) what they could have done together… paige
Wow, what a great/funny Hanson reference…
Taylor is right about one thing: Why make this post? Any more 30 year old stories you want to premiere here?
did I ever say they weren’t the most influential? no. did I ever say they don’t have a few good albums? no. but anyone who thinks they aren’t extremely overrated probably also thought Wings was original. there’s hero-worship and then there’s good music.
Just imagine what it would sound like if a group came along and revolutionalized the music scene as much as the Beatles did in their day. Sure it might not sound as amazing today, as it did back then, but these guys were like Pavement times twenty.
women and ladies. they MADE music. hands down!!!
Taylor’s a little sad coz he had a blog but it was shit with flies on it and no one gave a fuck to visit. Even his mom said so.
Taylor, you warned, bitch.
Great post, bit of history gives a bit of perspective -I know that without Lone Wolf McQuaid there never would have been Walker Texas Ranger.
Keep kicking ass.
Didn’t know that was what TOO MANY PEOPLE was about. Thanks. Also, excellent post. Even if the subjects don’t always appease everyone, you have a way of writing that is quite entertaining. Keep it up. CLEO
people are just being fools as usual,i agree on tailor about how overhyped they are..yeah they contributed..
but so did many others at the time and therefore the beatles dont need more praise than the others..
glad most of you liked it! for those that are anti-beatles, that’s cool.. i suppose. Sgt. Pepper’s aside – take a listen to the entire side 2 of Abbey Road without interruption. while you’re listening, keep reminding yourself the band was completely dysfunctional and inches from being disbanded at the time.
Great post, I don’t care how old the times referenced were. You could write about the demise about Limp Bizkit and it’d probably be an interesting/entertaining read… but no, you don’t have to write that. Write what interests you, man.
taylor-
Why even write this? Because it’s an interesting post that no other music blogs are doing. Do you want another post about the latest Sufjan Stevens track on a compilation disk?
This post is rubbish; it just reiterates everything we know already.
Furthermore, the writing is terrible. Some of the sentences are clumsy, and the rest of the grammar is poor; for example: a heartfelt dissolution implies an earest break-up, which I’d consider a bit of a non-sequitur. Also, are they perfect foils for one another and perfect foils for good friends? There’s more, but whatever.
Yawn.
And I like The Beatles.
In addition to side two of Abbey Road, Revolver is good the whole way through.
average: what an appropriate name for that clumsy comment. of course he couldn’t go into the entire history of JL/PM breakup…there have been multitudes of BOOKS written on that subject. lighten up, my brother.
jesus christ some of you folks are pissy. I was just going to add that McCartney made some attempts in his solo work and Wings work to write songs that “mock” or sound exactly like a Lennon composition might, in order to somehow prove he could do the same thing better. Just another way they used to joust one another. Great blog. Cool post. Fuck anyone who hates the Beatles.
You err by saying that Lennon-McCartney was a great songwriting team. If fact, after the first few years, they rarely wrote together after 1964. They were competitive, yes, but they did not as a rule write together. Exceptions to that were tracks like “Birthday,” or “Day in a Life” where a McCartney-penned section was grafted into a Lennon song.
Great post, thanks a ton. FWIW, you guys that say they contributed a little, were overhyped, blah blah blah, you’re screwed in the head. The Beatles kicked open the door for groups like the Stones, Zeppelin, Elvis and others.
Great post, but any talk of Lennon/McCartney feud tracks MUST include Paul’s “Let Me Roll It” from Band on the Run. He’s obviously have fun at John’s heavily echoed lyrical style in “How Do You Sleep.”
The thing most people overlook is the fact that Paul made some real great stuff on these two first albums he made, MC CARTNEY & RAM. It is important (that’s a matter of opinion) to know that this guy, PAUL, wrote some of his greatest stuff just before his first two, what sounds like sloppy albums. Just imagine songs like MAYBE I’M AMAZED, JUNK… I mean , to me those are amongs the 20 best tunes I have ever heard and okay, TOO MANY PEOPLE is not best-Stravinski, but it remains to be the work of a guy at the top of his ability, read geniusy. Paul had just finished songs like WINDING ROAD (genious even if the recording, thanks to Lennon’s jalousy totaly messed up) LET IT BE (same thing only now joined by dear George to mess it even more up), GET BACK, THE END, GOLDEN SLUMBERS, CARRY THAT WEIGHT… I urge any musician to take these albums in consideration for, even tho’ they SEEM sloppy, they are made by a genius, PAUL that is, who just lost the … Beatles. How would you feel? Anyway, I rather read the stuff on this site then any stupid stuff you get all over the internet or whatever. By the way, I love John and George… Bonzo too. “TOO MANY PEOPLE” was a reaction to songs like “HOW DO YOU SLEEP” by John (who actually wrote it amusingly with Yoko and not half as viscious as it may sound). Paul must not have been happy with lines like (quoting the orginal lines that were eventualy changed by KLEIN) THE ONLY THING YOU DID WAS YESTERDAY, AND YOU PROBEBLY PINCHED THAT BITCH ANYWAY, which, if you read this PAUL, you probebly did from a song that started with a “B”, YESTERDAY that is,and ya know it, and John knew it… Ilove you Paul… [email protected]
