Polly Hi is Sam McDougle, a neuroscience PhD candidate at Princeton who also happens to be in a band from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. After making the rounds last year through a few of our blogger friends, he’s back with a new 7″ featuring a pair of laid back indie-pop gems that stretch from jangly shoegaze to old fashioned power pop.
There’s something special about these tunes — maybe it’s my affinity for all things Elliott Smith, but both have brushes of optimism stroking their aesthetic that seem to mask a subtly unpleasant underbelly, like a chamfered razor’s edge. The melodies are sticky-sweet, especially on “Mouses”, where McDougle hits his most elegantly uplifting stride. “Carousel”, on the other hand, seems plucked from The Shins’ back catalogue, a walking tale of a tune that completely explodes into its final third; the band plays as the stage burns around them.
There’s apparently a physical 7″ on the horizon. We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, check out a few more songs at Polly Hi’s soundcloud »
